The establishment of the ghetto dates to the mid-16th century and according to records the ghetto was chained shut at night. The majority of houses after reconstruction stand here today, including House No. 44 where a Jewish ritual bath (mikva) was once located; remains of the equipment for heating the water remain at the site today. The synagogue stood in the centre of the ghetto, perhaps 100 metres southwest from the square. The synagogue served until 1940; afterwards it was used as a warehouse and later as a hide drying facility. Thanks to the effects of disinfectant agents the interior wooden furnishings are some of the best preserved in the country. A large portion of the furniture, unique textiles, and numerous fragments of old books and manuscripts have been preserved.
